Tragedy Strikes as Naval Speedboat Collides with Ferry near Mumbai

A collision off the Mumbai coast between a naval speedboat and a passenger ferry has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, including three naval personnel. At least 13 people have tragically lost their lives following a collision between an Indian naval speedboat and a passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai, as confirmed by a navy spokesperson. Among the deceased are three navy personnel, while Maharashtra state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis reported that over 100 individuals have been rescued from the troubled waters.

Video footage circulating online captures the alarming moment the speedboat circled before crashing into the ferry, which was en route to the Elephanta Caves, a well-known tourist attraction. The navy has indicated that the collision was caused by an "engine malfunction" during trials for the speedboat.

"A Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry," stated a navy spokesperson, who expressed deep regret over the "tragic loss" of life. Eyewitness accounts reflect the chaos of the incident, with one passenger recalling to ABP Majha news channel: "The speedboat crashed into our boat, and water started entering our boat and it overturned. The driver asked us to wear life jackets."

Another survivor recounted their harrowing experience: "I swam for 15 minutes before I was rescued by another boat," highlighting the peril faced by those on board amid the disaster.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on social media: "The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon." The Indian navy is continuing to conduct investigations into the incident as it mourns the loss of lives.
