**Mathematics Takes Center Stage with 'Mathemalchemy' Exhibit**

A unique fusion of art and math embarks on a traveling journey, captivating audiences everywhere.

Duke University's Ingrid Daubechies brings an immersive installation combining the beauty of mathematics and creativity.

Ingrid Daubechies, a celebrated mathematician from Duke University, is making waves with a captivating initiative known as “Mathemalchemy.” This installation artfully merges the worlds of mathematics and art, aiming to engage broader audiences. On the weekend of March 14, which also marks Pi Day, Dr. Daubechies will be in Montreal at the University of Quebec to celebrate the International Day of Mathematics, themed around creativity and math.

Dr. Daubechies has always had a knack for integrating her mathematical expertise into creative projects, a talent she also applies to baking. She enjoys making cookies in the shape of pi, the famous mathematical constant approximately equal to 3.14159. Though she enjoys a traditional sugar cookie recipe, she prefers a savory twist using Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese along with fresh thyme and marjoram. Notably, her custom-made pi-shaped cookie cutter is designed to optimize dough usage, reducing waste by allowing cookies to fit precisely together.

“Mathemalchemy” is no ordinary exhibition. It represents years of dedication and collaboration, created in partnership with fiber artist Dominique Ehrmann and a team of 24 artistic mathematicians. This dynamic, 360-degree installation, stretching 20 feet in length and standing 9.5 feet tall, invites viewers to dive into a curated experience where mathematics and art beautifully collide. Since its debut in 2022 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., it has travelled to numerous locations, gaining acclaim along the way.

During her visit to Montreal, Dr. Daubechies will lead special tours of this interactive exhibit and deliver a public talk titled “Mathematics to the Rescue of Art Curators”, exploring how mathematical concepts aid in artistic endeavors. This exciting fusion of disciplines promises to inspire a diverse audience, showcasing the importance of creativity within the realm of mathematics, and inviting everyone to see the beauty in numbers.
