Fresh Russian Strikes Claim Lives and Ignite Tensions Across Ukraine
Overnight drone and missile attacks have left at least eight dead and over 30 injured in multiple Ukrainian regions, as violence continues amidst the ongoing conflict.
At least eight people lost their lives and over 30 were injured during a wave of Russian drone and missile attacks that struck various regions of Ukraine overnight, according to regional authorities. The western Khmelnytskyi region reported four fatalities, while three people died in the Kyiv region, and one was killed in Mykolaiv.
This surge in violence comes on the heels of one of the most severe bombardments Kyiv has endured since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. Russia's Ministry of Defence disclosed that their air defence units successfully intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions, including the capital, during a four-hour window on Saturday. Notably, no casualties were reported from these interceptions, although the incidents led to a temporary halt of all flights at Moscow's airports.
In Kyiv, regional head Mykola Kalashnyk confirmed three deaths along with 10 injuries, sharing images on social media depicting several homes ablaze due to the strikes. Local officials reported that 11 people were hurt in the capital, with numerous residential structures, including a dormitory, sustaining damage. As the city celebrates its annual Kyiv Day holiday, many residents sought refuge in underground metro stations amid the chaos.
In Mykolaiv, the state emergency service revealed that emergency responders recovered the body of an elderly man from a five-storey building that was hit by a drone, with an additional five people reported injured. Meanwhile, authorities in the northeastern city of Kharkiv noted three injuries linked to the ongoing conflict.
In response to the drone onslaught, Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that 12 incoming drones directed toward the city were destroyed, prompting emergency teams to evaluate the damage caused by falling debris. As the conflict continues to unfold, tensions remain palpable, leaving prospects for peace in Ukraine appearing increasingly distant.
