Danish Train Collision with Tanker Leaves One Dead and Many Injured
Tragic accident in southern Denmark as a train derails after colliding with a slurry tanker.
At around midnight, emergency services confirmed that one person lost their life and at least 27 others sustained injuries when a train derailed after hitting a slurry tanker in southern Jutland, near the German border. The victim, identified as a 60-year-old woman, was among the more than 100 passengers involved in the incident. Authorities reported that five individuals were seriously injured, with two in critical condition.
The crash took place on a railway line between Tinglev and Kliplev, leading to the complete derailment of at least two train carriages. Images from the scene showed one carriage overturned, with passengers milling about the vicinity in shock. Many of those onboard were students traveling from a school in Sønderborg, the ultimate destination of the train. Fortunately, none of the students or their accompanying teachers were seriously hurt, although they were provided access to counseling services following the traumatic experience.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed her condolences, stating, "My thoughts go out to the relatives, the many injured and everyone who is currently affected by the accident." The country’s rail operator, DSB, has suspended services on the route as recovery and investigation efforts continue. According to Banedanmark, the national rail agency, the collision occurred at a level crossing, prompting an immediate inquiry into the incident. Cranes remain on-site to lift damaged carriages and search for any potential remaining victims.
