Turkey Imposes Fines for Early Stand-Ups on Flights

New regulations mandate fines for airline passengers who stand before the seatbelt sign is off.

In an effort to enhance passenger safety and order, Turkish authorities have announced fines for those who stand up before the seatbelt sign turns off after landing, responding to significant complaints about this behavior.

Turkey's civil aviation authority recently instituted a new rule targeting passengers who stand prematurely upon landing. This change comes after reports highlighted a troubling trend of travelers grabbing overhead baggage while the plane is still taxiing, which has posed safety concerns and led to a spike in complaints.

The aviation authority estimates fines will approach USD 70 (£50), although the exact amount isn’t detailed within their guidelines. This regulation took effect earlier this month and is particularly aimed at maintaining order during a crucial time when safety is paramount.

With millions flocking to Turkey annually, the Turkish Airlines has quickly adapted to these rules. They are now required to inform passengers through in-flight announcements explicitly instructing them to keep seatbelts fastened and refrain from standing or accessing overhead compartments until the seatbelt sign illuminates green. Non-compliance will lead to disruptive passenger reports submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The outcome aims to secure a smoother, safer landing process, easing the travel experience for both airlines and passengers alike. Turkey's commitment to enforce this policy highlights a broader trend within the aviation industry to prioritize passenger safety and comfort during air travel.
