British F-35B Fighter Jet, Stuck in India, Finally Returns Home
A British jet that became a local sensation during weeks of repairs in India has left for its base.
A British F-35B fighter jet, which had been grounded at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in southern India due to mechanical issues, has finally departed for home after a prolonged stay. The aircraft, unable to return to its carrier in the Arabian Sea since mid-June because of adverse weather conditions, became something of a local celebrity during its time on the ground.
British engineers worked for several weeks to remedy the jet's mechanical problems, particularly its hydraulic and auxiliary power systems. In a statement, the British High Commission in New Delhi confirmed that the engineering team successfully repaired the aircraft, which is now resuming active service. The advanced fighter, valued at over $100 million, is en route to Darwin, Australia.
According to an anonymous airport official, a contingent of 14 engineers was dispatched to complete the repairs. They were set to be flown back to the UK by a Royal Air Force aircraft. During its extended stay at the airport, the F-35B was under tight security due to its sensitive technology, which is employed by several of Britain’s allies including the United States.
Although airport staff were barred from the hangar where the aircraft was being worked on, the F-35B attracted considerable attention from locals. Many poked fun at the situation on social media, creating memes and even humorous travel reviews about the plane. With the news of its departure, messages of farewell flooded platforms, including playful notes like, “Bye, bro,” and “We loved having you here.” One fan even urged the jet to remain, expressing a sense of attachment formed during its prolonged visit.
As it soars back into the skies, this F-35B will not only carry out its military mission but also depart with a unique bond forged with the community that embraced it.
