At least one person is dead and nine others are injured after a shooting and a fire at a Mormon church in Michigan, local police say.

Officials reported there was an active shooter incident at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, a town 60 miles (96 km) northwest of Detroit, on Sunday morning.

There are multiple victims and the shooter is down, police said. Authorities have yet to identify the suspect or disclose a motive.

The Grand Blanc Township Police Department indicated that there is no further threat to the public and that the fire has been contained.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the incident via social media, describing it as a horrific shooting and fire. She confirmed federal agents from the FBI and ATF were en route to the scene. Bondi expressed her heartbreak for the victims of what she called a terrible tragedy.

FBI Director Kash Patel labeled the shooting as a cowardly and criminal act, affirming that federal assistance would support local law enforcement efforts. Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the violence, asserting that it is unacceptable anywhere, particularly in a place of worship.
