Hollywood Pays Tribute as Iconic Actor Robert Redford Passes Away at 89

Acting legend Robert Redford has passed away at his home in Sundance, Utah at the age of 89. In a statement, his publicist Cindi Berger confirmed that he died surrounded by loved ones on September 16.

Renowned for his roles in classic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, Redford also left a lasting impact as a director and environmental activist. He founded the Sundance Film Festival, which has nurtured independent filmmaking since its inception in the late 1980s.

Hollywood stars including Meryl Streep and Jane Fonda expressed their grief, highlighting Redford's influence both on and off the screen. Streep referred to him as one of the lions of the industry, while Fonda shared a heartfelt tribute, stating he stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.

Redford's journey in cinema began with his breakout role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which catapulted him to stardom. He was recognized with an Academy Award for Best Director for Ordinary People in 1980 and announced his retirement from acting in 2018.

Throughout his career, Redford championed progressive values, advocating for the environment and access to the arts, and he leaves behind a legacy that inspires future generations.
