A South African MP's quick thinking and firearm use thwarted a gang attack on him and his colleagues.
Ian Cameron, a South African Member of Parliament, has garnered respect for his decisive act of self-defense when a group of attackers targeted him and two colleagues during an attempted hijacking in Cape Town. The three were returning from an official visit to a police academy in the township of Philippi when their vehicle was suddenly struck by bricks, causing injuries to Cameron and another colleague, Nicholas Gotsell.
As the assailants aggressively assaulted the car, breaking windows, Cameron was injured and faced imminent danger. In a courageous response, he drew his licensed firearm and fired at the attackers, injuring one in the process. Reports indicate that police have since arrested two suspects, aged 16 and 18, while search efforts continue for a third individual involved in the attack.
Cameron recounted the chaos, noting that the initial brick that shattered the car window struck him directly in the face. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “I realized that if we don't do something, then this can go really bad." After successfully defending himself and his colleagues, they managed to escape to nearby secure premises for safety.
Both Cameron and Gotsell faced injuries; Cameron emerged with a broken lip and damaged teeth, while Gotsell required medical attention after suffering a head injury. Gotsell later lauded Cameron's bravery, commending his response under pressure.
The three parliamentarians are members of the Democratic Alliance (DA), the second-largest party in South Africa's coalition government. The party has echoed concerns over the escalating crime rates in the nation, calling the incident a clear indication of how severe the situation has become. In South Africa, where gun ownership is legal with a licence, incidents of violent crime continue to be a pressing issue for citizens and lawmakers alike.
