Thai-Cambodian Border Clash Escalates Tensions Between Nations
Troops from Thailand and Cambodia engage in conflict over disputed territory amid rising military presence.
Troops from Thailand and Cambodia clashed early Thursday morning in a disputed area bordered by the Khmer temple Ta Muen Thom, with both nations alleging that the other opened fire first. The Thai military reported that Cambodian forces initiated the violence, while Cambodia's defense ministry claimed their troops were reacting in self-defense after being provoked by Thai gunfire.
Amidst escalating tensions in the region, Cambodia deployed heavy artillery and a surveillance drone prior to the incident, leading to at least two injuries among Thai soldiers. Cambodian Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata emphasized that their military response was necessary to protect national sovereignty, accusing Thailand of trespassing. Former Cambodian leader Hun Sen took to social media to highlight the aggressive actions by Thai forces, stating that parts of Cambodian territory were impacted by shelling. He urged citizens to remain calm amidst the rising hostilities.
Mr. Socheata reiterated Cambodia’s historical preference for peaceful resolution, yet asserted the necessity of armed response against aggression, echoed by the newly appointed Prime Minister Hun Manet. Concurrently, Thailand's acting premier, Phumtham Wechayachai remarked on the sensitivity of the situation, advocating for a measured approach that complies with international law.
This latest clash follows the recent recall of Thailand’s ambassador to Cambodia and the expulsion of Cambodia's ambassador, marking a significant low in diplomatic relations, particularly after deadly confrontations earlier this year. The two nations, in the past two months, have enacted reciprocal restrictions on each other while bolstering military presence at the contested border.
