Thailand Reinforces Travel Ban to Cambodia Amid Ongoing Border Dispute
Tensions escalate as Thailand imposes restrictions on tourist travel to Cambodia due to a bitter border conflict.
The Thai government has declared that all travelers, including tourists, are prohibited from crossing into Cambodia through various checkpoints in Thai provinces, as well as from flying to the popular destination of Siem Reap. This decision aligns with the current security concerns stemming from a bitter ongoing dispute between the two countries.
The relationship between Thailand and Cambodia has deteriorated significantly following armed conflicts near their shared border in May that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. In response, Cambodia imposed its own restrictions, banning imports from Thailand, including popular goods like fruits, vegetables, and even entertainment content such as Thai dramas.
Thai authorities announced that humanitarian exemptions may be made for specific individuals, such as students or medical patients, but emphasized that these would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis at border checkpoints. Furthermore, the military has positioned the travel restrictions as a means to combat illegal scam operations that are reportedly rampant in Cambodia.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has voiced her commitment to addressing these scam operations, proposing measures to suspend internet access for security agencies in Cambodia. Additionally, any direct flights from Thailand to Siem Reap will also be barred for foreign tourists.
Previously, Thailand had imposed similar bans regarding travel to Myanmar, in response to its own issues with scam operations. The ongoing conflict has sparked considerable political turmoil within Paetongtarn Shinawatra's government, especially after a controversial phone call with Cambodia's former leader Hun Sen leaked to the public. In the conversation, she used familiar terms of endearment for Hun Sen, leading to criticism that she might have compromised Thailand's military authority; as a result, a coalition partner of her party has since withdrawn support.
The roots of the Thailand-Cambodia tensions reach back over a hundred years, tracing back to colonial borders established during French rule in Cambodia.
