Putin's Demands Could Impede Cease-Fire Agreement with Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin outlines extensive conditions that may obstruct a proposed cease-fire with Ukraine, claiming he has the upper hand in negotiations.
President Vladimir Putin has left the door open for a potential month-long cease-fire proposal put forth by the United States and Ukraine; however, he has laid out a series of extensive conditions. These demands, articulated yesterday, are likely to impede any truce from occurring or, worse, render it impossible to achieve.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to Putin's conditions, asserting that the multitude of demands has made it “extremely unlikely” that an agreement could be reached promptly. He expressed concern that any hope for peace would be significantly delayed under the current terms.
Specifically, Putin has indicated he would push for restrictions on Ukraine’s capacity to mobilize additional troops and acquire arms during the cease-fire period. Additionally, he has stated that Ukrainian forces located within Russia’s Kursk region would not be permitted to withdraw peacefully; instead, he suggested that Kyiv’s options would narrow down to surrender. His remarks signal confidence in Russia's current position on the battlefield, suggesting that extending negotiations could work to his advantage.
Involving international intermediaries, the Kremlin confirmed a phone conversation between Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is positioning himself as a mediator in the conflict.
Meanwhile, the former U.S. President Donald Trump noted that discussions between the U.S. and Ukraine have included considerations around land that Kyiv would need to concede in order to reach a final agreement, stating that a great deal of the particulars of a settlement have already been addressed.
On the ground, Russian forces are claiming success with the recapture of Sudzha, a significant population center in the Kursk region previously held by Ukraine last summer, further intensifying the ongoing conflict.
