Xi and Putin Strengthen Ties in Video Call Post-Trump Inauguration

In a significant video call after Donald Trump's inauguration, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to elevate their bilateral relations even further, amidst ongoing tensions with the U.S.

In a move that signals deepening ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a video call for about an hour and a half shortly after Donald Trump took his oath as the 45th President of the United States. According to state media from both nations, the leaders pledged to enhance their bilateral relations, founded on "friendship, mutual trust, and support."

During the call, Putin referred to Xi as his "dear friend" and expressed a desire to fortify the relationship between Russia and China despite ongoing external pressures. Xi, who echoed this sentiment, called for an increase in "strategic coordination, firming up mutual support, and safeguarding legitimate interests." This exchange comes at a time when Trump has expressed aggressive stances toward China, labeling it an "abuser" in trade, and has threatened tariffs. Moreover, he warned Moscow of potential consequences if it fails to aid in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin stated that any settlement regarding Ukraine needs to be considerate of Russian interests, as highlighted by foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov. Notably, China has faced accusations of supporting Russia's military efforts in Ukraine through the supply of essential components. Notably, trade between Russia and China surged to a record $240 billion in 2023, marking a more than 64% increase since before the onset of the Ukraine invasion.

While both leaders conveyed a willingness to establish relations with the United States on a "mutually beneficial and respectful" foundation, Ushakov remarked that this interaction was not directly linked to Trump's inauguration. The discussion extended beyond U.S.-China relations, touching upon critical global situations involving the Middle East, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Xi had recently spoken with Trump about various topics, including trade and technology matters, reflecting ongoing diplomatic dialogues. Meanwhile, Putin has yet to connect directly with Trump post-inauguration but extended his congratulations on state television shortly before the ceremony.
