Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has unveiled plans to allocate hundreds of billions of dollars towards the establishment of vast AI data centers across the United States. Founder Mark Zuckerberg disclosed that the first of these facilities, named Prometheus, is set to commence operations in 2026 and will occupy an area almost equal to Manhattan's 59.1 square kilometers (22.8 square miles).
The company is heavily investing in what it describes as "superintelligence," a technology with the potential to surpass human cognitive capabilities. Despite its origins in online advertising, which contributed to over $160 billion in revenue in 2024, Meta is shifting focus towards AI infrastructure.
In a recent post on Threads, Zuckerberg elaborated on the initiative, stating that Meta will develop multiple multi-gigawatt data clusters. One specifically named Hyperion is projected to reach five gigawatts capacity in the coming years. “We are building multiple more titan clusters as well,” he noted, emphasizing the expansive nature of the project.
Prometheus is slated for New Albany, Ohio, while Hyperion is to be constructed in Louisiana, targeting operational readiness by 2030. Zuckerberg expressed confidence in Meta's substantial investment, identifying these AI centers with names that reflect their monumental scale and significance.
Analysts like Karl Freund from Cambrian AI Research remarked on Zuckerberg's aggressive strategy to lead in the AI domain through significant spending. "Clearly, Zuckerberg intends to spend his way to the top of the AI heap," Freund stated, highlighting the access talented hires will have to cutting-edge AI technology.
