Escalation in Gaza: Over 55 Casualties After Renewed Israeli Airstrikes
Air strikes resume as Israel ramps up military operations in Gaza following failed ceasefire negotiations.
At least 55 Palestinians have been reported killed overnight in new Israeli air strikes on Gaza, according to the Hamas-run civil defense agency. This escalation comes as Israel has ramped up its bombing campaign and resumed military ground operations in the region, with recent strikes claimed to have resulted in over 430 fatalities in the past two days, per the Hamas-run health ministry.
Hamas has condemned Israel’s ground operations as a "new and dangerous" breach of the ceasefire agreement that took effect in January. Israel's military recommenced attacks following the breakdown of negotiations for an extension of that ceasefire. The Israeli government has issued a stern warning that operations will intensify until Hamas releases the remaining hostages, which they state amount to 59 individuals, 24 of whom are believed to be alive.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday the initiation of "targeted ground activities" aimed at establishing what they describe as a "partial buffer" between the northern and southern parts of Gaza. This so-called "limited ground operation" sees troops deployed along a crucial area known as the Netzarim corridor, a geographic division within the region.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Tuesday that Israel has "resumed combat in full force," asserting that any future ceasefire discussions would occur "under fire." Tensions have mounted between Israel and Hamas as they have struggled to agree upon terms for extending the ceasefire beyond its initial phase, which ended on March 1.
While Hamas rejected Israel's conditions for renegotiation, they proposed releasing a surviving American hostage along with four deceased hostages as negotiations continued. Israel has imposed a blockade on food, fuel, and medical supplies entering Gaza, citing that Hamas had allegedly misappropriated these essentials for their strategic maneuvers against Israel.
The current conflict began on October 7, 2023, following a raid by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals, predominantly civilians, alongside the taking of 251 hostages. The Israeli government responded with a sweeping military offensive leading to a staggering death toll of more than 48,500 Palestinians, primarily non-combatants, as reported by Hamas health officials, before the renewed offensive this week.
