The Rijksmuseum has unveiled a remarkable artifact, an almost 200-year-old condom in "mint condition," as part of an exhibition centered on 19th-century prostitution and sexual health. The condom, believed to have originated in a French brothel, features a peculiar print depicting a nun interacting provocatively with three clergymen, reflecting both the light-hearted and serious aspects of sexual health of that era. Curator Joyce Zelen noted that the museum was the sole bidder at auction for the condom, which was deemed unused after inspection, leading to a remarkable response from museum visitors since its display began. The artifact embodies not just a piece of erotic history but also serves as a commentary on the anxieties surrounding sexual health, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases common at the time.

Zelen highlighted the unique position of the condom within their extensive Print Room collection, emphasizing that it is the only example they hold, and expressed openness to loaning it to other museums while acknowledging the fragility of the item. The display will remain accessible to the public until the end of November, inviting curiosity and conversation around issues of sexuality throughout history.
