Canada Intensifies Trade Talks with U.S. Ahead of July Deadline
Negotiations between Canada and the United States are on a fast track as both nations aim to finalize trade agreements before the looming deadline.
Canada’s trade negotiation team is ramping up discussions with the United States following a recent impasse, with a crucial July 21 deadline approaching for a potential agreement. Unlike other U.S. negotiations with various nations set to wrap by Wednesday, President Trump has extended those discussions until August 1.
Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. and lead trade negotiator, stated that communication between Canadian and American officials has become nearly daily. The urgency of reaching a conclusion by the July 21 deadline was emphasized during the previous month’s Group of 7 summit in Kananaskis, where Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Trump highlighted the need for a quick resolution.
“Both of our leaders in their bilateral discussions said we should try to get this done as quickly as possible,” Hillman asserted in a recent interview, expressing confidence in the established relationships between the negotiating teams. Given their familiarity with each other, she believes efficiency can be achieved in the negotiations.
