Tragic Fire Claims Lives at Popular Turkish Ski Resort

A devastating hotel fire in Turkey's Bolu Province leaves multiple dead and injured as families vacation during school break.

At least 10 individuals have lost their lives and over 30 others were reported injured following a fire that erupted early Tuesday at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya, a popular ski resort in western Turkey. The blaze broke out at approximately 3:30 a.m. local time, during a peak winter break period when many families seek leisure on the slopes.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined. As the inferno spread, guests, many of whom were asleep, rushed to escape, with some using bedsheets to fashion makeshift ropes, as seen in viral video footage. The hotel, situated amid picturesque snow-covered mountains, saw a rapid response from local firefighters and rescue teams.

Eyewitness accounts highlight the chaos of the situation. Necmi Kepcetutan, a skiing instructor who worked at the hotel, recounted observing flames engulfing the fourth floor, where the restaurant was located. He bravely assisted others in their escape but faced challenges due to the volume of smoke. "People were screaming to be rescued," he reported during an interview, emphasizing the sense of urgency and fear that filled the hotel.

As the investigation into the incident continues, the local community comes together to support those affected by this tragedy during what should have been a joyous season of recreation and family time.
