Public Outcry as Uganda's President's Son Confirms Detention of Opposition Bodyguard

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's remarks about the detention of bodyguard Eddie Mutwe spark significant anger and calls for action from the public.

The confirmation of opposition leader Bobi Wine's bodyguard, Eddie Mutwe, being held by Uganda's military has led to widespread condemnation and a social media campaign demanding his release. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's controversial remarks about the case have fueled concerns over political repression in the country.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Uganda's long-serving president Yoweri Museveni, is facing backlash after acknowledging the detention of Eddie Mutwe, a bodyguard to opposition leader Bobi Wine, who has been missing for five days. Mutwe was reportedly abducted by unknown forces in military gear on Sunday in Kiwango, an incident that has ignited public outrage and demands for his release under the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe.

In a series of provocative posts on social media, Kainerugaba shared a picture of Mutwe with a clean-shaven head, claiming he was “in my basement.” The military chief, known for overstepping the traditional military decorum in his public statements, has faced increasing criticism regarding his political comments and the subsequent implications on military-civil relations. Amidst his audacious tweets, he suggested that he would only release Mutwe if dictated by his father, furthering concerns over the militarization of political dissent.

Security forces have remained silent on Mutwe’s whereabouts, with police noting they have no awareness of his detention. Opposition members and various rights groups are demanding accountability and the immediate production of Mutwe in court, while Bobi Wine has called for a solidarity rally in Kampala, emphasizing the need for unity against political oppression.

The Uganda Law Society has denounced Mutwe’s detention as part of a broader strategy to silence dissenting voices, highlighting the risks posed by intertwining military influence and political authority. Mutwe, a frequent target during anti-opposition crackdowns, has previously faced numerous legal challenges, which critics claim are politically motivated.

As political tensions rise in Uganda ahead of the 2026 elections, the situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of opposition figures and the role of security forces in suppressing political expression.
