Sergei Tikhanovsky: Emerging from Darkness, Not Broken After Five Years in Belarus Prison
Sergei Tikhanovsky shares his harrowing experiences imprisoned for opposing authoritarian rule in Belarus.
Sergei Tikhanovsky, the Belarusian opposition figure, has recently experienced a dramatic release from a high-security prison after enduring over five years of solitary confinement. Known for his strong stance against the dictatorship of Alexander Lukashenko, Tikhanovsky's long-awaited freedom comes after the intervention of a senior US delegation, which led to the release of him and 13 other political prisoners.
In an emotional reunion with his daughter, who failed to recognize him due to his drastic physical changes, Tikhanovsky expressed profound sadness at their lost time. Since his arrest in 2020, he has lost approximately 60 kg (132 pounds), yet he asserts his spirit remains unbroken. "Physically I'm half the size and half the weight... but my spirit is not broken. Maybe it's even stronger," he explained, emphasizing the necessity for continued resistance against the regime.
Before his imprisonment, Tikhanovsky had established himself as a significant political figure, leveraging social media to amplify the frustrations of everyday Belarusians. He boldly attempted to run for president, highlighting the regime's suppression of free elections, which culminated in his arrest. Following his incarceration, his wife, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, stepped into the political arena, quickly gathering a significant following.
During his time in prison, Tikhanovsky faced extreme mistreatment, including periods of isolation, punitive confinement for minor infractions, and a complete lack of communication with the outside world. "For the last two-and-a-half years, I was in total isolation," he revealed. "They'd say: you will die in prison." Despite this torment, he remained resilient and refused to compromise his principles, even amidst severe psychological and physical hardships.
The recent release of Tikhanovsky and others aligns with Lukashenko’s diplomatic strategies as he seeks to foster dialogue with the United States, following an international backlash from his regime’s violent suppression of dissent. While Sergei calls for the release of all remaining prisoners, he and his family remain cautious about the potential implications of the US' relationship with the Belarusian dictatorship.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, now a prominent leader for the opposition, supports Sergei’s needs but reminds that the fight for justice is far from over. Their reunion is bittersweet, as they grapple with the reality that while some prisoners have been released, many remain imprisoned under harsh conditions.
In the days following his release, Tikhanovsky has actively participated in discussions aimed at fostering international awareness and support for Belarus' democratic movement. His focus, he states, is on establishing a free Belarus, a dream he and his family now aspire to together, despite the daunting challenges ahead.
