Ukraine Accuses China of Sending Fighters to Support Russia

President Zelensky asserts that at least 155 Chinese citizens are engaged in combat for Russia, marking a significant shift in the narrative of international involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims that 155 Chinese nationals are fighting for Russia, substantiated by the capture of two Chinese fighters. China's government denies these allegations, highlighting its stance on neutrality and the need for peace in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asserted that a minimum of 155 Chinese nationals are actively fighting for Russia in the ongoing conflict, making this the first official acknowledgment from Kyiv regarding China's potential military involvement. This declaration follows the recent capture of two Chinese fighters, an event Zelensky highlighted in a video shared via social media, showcasing the captured fighters’ passports.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Zelensky emphasized the seriousness of the situation, citing detailed intelligence gathered about the Chinese individuals purportedly fighting alongside Russian forces. He mentioned that Russia is reportedly seeking recruits from China through social media, an effort he claims has the backing and awareness of the Chinese government.

In response to Zelensky's statements, a representative from the Chinese foreign ministry urged involved parties to acknowledge and accurately interpret China's relationship with the conflict. Lin Jian, the spokesperson, reiterated that China is neither the originator nor a participant in the Ukrainian crisis, framing its stance as one favoring a peaceful resolution and distancing Chinese citizens from armed conflicts abroad. He noted that China has consistently advised its citizens to avoid participating in any form of military action.

Zelensky’s comments came after reports of encountering Chinese soldiers in Ukraine's Donetsk region, where two were reportedly taken prisoner. The captured fighters spoke Mandarin and indicated their unexpected involvement in combat, suggesting they had no prior military experience before being deployed.

Zelensky has expressed concern that the involvement of Chinese citizens represents a deliberate escalation by Russia in the conflict, calling for international attention and response. The U.S. government has echoed these concerns, describing the reports of Chinese fighters for Russia as "disturbing." Historically, Ukraine has questioned China's proclaimed neutrality, citing concerns about potential support for Russian military endeavors and alleging that China supplies key materials aiding Russia's military efforts.

While China and Russia maintain a cooperative political and economic relationship, Beijing insists it adheres to a neutral position, stating that it does not provide lethal military supplies to Russia. The discourse surrounding the involvement of foreign fighters, including those from China, continues to evolve within the context of the war in Ukraine.
