Didier Dubreucq, a 69-year-old man implicated in the notorious Paris heist involving reality TV icon Kim Kardashian, has died one month following his conviction, according to reports from French media. Dubreucq, who was undergoing treatment for lung cancer while in detention leading up to his trial, faced charges relating to the significant theft of jewelry valued in the millions.
In May of this year, Dubreucq and seven of his accomplices were found guilty of orchestrating the high-stakes robbery that occurred nearly a decade ago. The aging suspect, known by the moniker "Blue Eyes," always maintained his innocence. During his court testimony in April, he insisted, "It's a mistaken identity case... I had nothing to do with this."
Due to his ongoing chemotherapy treatment, Dubreucq missed his sentencing hearing but was nonetheless sentenced to seven years in prison, with five of those years suspended. Fortunately for him, he did not have to serve additional time behind bars as he had already spent two years in pre-trial detention. In the same trial, three of his co-conspirators received sentences of up to eight years, also mostly suspended, owing to the time they had already served.
The presiding Judge, David De Pas, justified the decision not to incarcerate the aging defendants, citing their health conditions as a primary factor. "The state of health of the main protagonists ethically prohibits incarcerating anyone," said the judge.
Over the span of the three-week trial, harrowing details emerged about Kardashian's experience during the robbery. The reality star recounted a terrifying moment when she was bound and held at gunpoint, fearing for her life. On the day she provided testimony, Kardashian shared her profound trauma, saying, "The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family."
Among the stolen goods was a stunning $4 million engagement ring, gifted to Kardashian by her then-husband Kanye West, which contributed to the total theft amounting to approximately $10 million. Following the verdicts, Kardashian released a statement emphasizing the long-term emotional ramifications of the incident.
