The Fourth of July celebration at the U.S. ambassador's residence in Canada, usually a highlight of Ottawa's social calendar, witnessed an uncharacteristic decrease in attendance this year. Traditionally known for its vibrant festivities, this year's event occurred amidst heightened tensions in U.S.-Canada relations, particularly due to recent controversial remarks made by President Trump questioning Canada's sovereignty.

As I arrived at the expansive grounds of Lornado, the ambassador’s residence, I couldn't help but notice the distinct atmosphere of unease surrounding the event. The heartfelt gathering usually known for fostering American-Canadian camaraderie was somewhat overshadowed by the notion that many Canadians have publicly reacted against products and services from the U.S. following remarks that suggested their nation could be economically coerced into becoming the 51st state.

Networking and socializing might have seen scaling back, as attendees estimated that fewer than half of the usual crowd made their way to the celebration—alongside smaller seating arrangements and limited catering options. Notably, I attended as a journalist, where even the offerings of hospitality extended to me were limited to a couple of glasses of water amidst a sea of contemplation on national identity and cross-border relations.
