A suspect in the fatal shooting of prominent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy has been arrested, the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced.
The 54-year-old parliamentarian was killed by an attacker posing as a courier in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, causing a nationwide manhunt.
According to Ukraine's Interior Minister Igor Klymenko, the suspect was apprehended in the western Khmelnytskyi region early Monday morning.
Parubiy, who gained prominence during Ukraine's Euromaidan protests advocating closer ties with the EU, was a significant political figure and served as the speaker of the Ukrainian parliament from April 2016 to August 2019.
Klymenko stated that the preliminary investigation indicated the assassination was 'carefully prepared,' revealing that the assailant had tracked Parubiy's travel plans and formulated an escape strategy.
In a statement, Zelensky shared that he had discussed the matter with chief prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko, who confirmed the suspect has provided preliminary testimony. The investigation remains active, with additional details forthcoming from Ukraine's national police force.
Unverified footage surfaced, allegedly showing the shooting, depicting a gunman dressed as a Glovo delivery worker. The company conveyed shock at the incident and vowed full cooperation with the investigation.
Parubiy was instrumental in the 2013-14 protests which ultimately brought down former President Viktor Yanukovych and represented a critical moment in Ukraine's pursuit of European integration.
