Dalit Woman Accuses 64 Men of Sexual Abuse in Kerala Over Five Years

The young survivor's allegations have led to the arrest of 28 suspects, but the case highlights the ongoing struggles against caste-based discrimination and sexual violence in India.

An 18-year-old Dalit woman from Kerala, India, has unveiled allegations claiming sexual abuse by 64 men spanning over five years, starting from when she was just 13 years old. Following her disclosure, authorities have apprehended 28 suspects who are currently in custody. Police reports indicate that those accused, aged between 17 and 47, include neighbors, sports coaches, and friends of the victim's father.

The revelation of this alleged abuse arose after a team of government counselors visited the woman’s home. They informed authorities, leading to the registration of 18 cases under various laws, including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, aimed at protecting marginalized communities in India, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act due to the victim's age.

Despite existing laws, Dalits continue to experience significant discrimination and violence due to their caste status. Police have confirmed that the abuse began with her neighbor, who allegedly took explicit photographs of her. On multiple occasions, the victim was reportedly gang-raped, with the accused using her father's phone number to communicate with her.

Additionally, the girl's family remained unaware of the situation until recently when the counselors brought it to light. The local Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which has taken the victim into protective custody, praised her bravery in coming forward. As investigations continue, more arrests may occur as the woman prepares to detail her experiences to a female police officer. This harrowing account has incited a wave of shock and condemnation across India, emphasizing the urgent need for addressing sexual violence and caste-based oppression within the country.
