Notre-Dame Cathedral Reopening: A New Era Begins
The iconic Parisian landmark is set to reopen on December 7 after extensive renovations following the 2019 fire.
Following five and a half years of dedicated reconstruction, the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is reopening its doors on December 7, 2024. This significant event marks the culmination of efforts to restore the building’s historical wood and lead roofing, famed spire, and other elements that were severely damaged during the catastrophic fire that took place in April 2019.
The reopening will commence with an official ceremony on Saturday, where French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to deliver a speech in front of the cathedral to a gathering of Roman Catholic leaders, foreign dignitaries, and generous patrons who contributed to the restoration efforts. This will be followed by the archbishop of Paris ceremonially striking the cathedral doors with his staff, a traditional act that will culminate in the opening of the doors and the commencement of a religious service. The service will also include the blessing of the great organ, which, although it was not damaged in the fire, required thorough cleansing from toxic lead dust.
Enhancing the festive atmosphere, a televised concert featuring the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra will take place in front of the cathedral. Renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel will lead the orchestra, accompanied by performances from celebrated artists including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, Angélique Kidjo from Benin, and Canadian singer Garou, among others.
On the following day, December 8, an altar consecration Mass is scheduled, with President Macron and around 170 bishops from across France and beyond expected to be in attendance, along with priests from Paris's 106 parishes. This momentous occasion signifies the beginning of a new chapter for one of the world's most beloved Gothic cathedrals, as it prepares to welcome the millions of visitors eager to experience its grandeur once more.
