Celebrations Erupt as the Dalai Lama Turns 90 Amid Monsoon Rains
Joyous festivities and a call for compassion mark the Dalai Lama's milestone birthday in India
On Sunday, an enthusiastic crowd of Tibetan Buddhists gathered in the serene Himalayan town of Dharamshala to commemorate the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama. Despite the ferocious monsoon rains, the atmosphere was vibrant as the beloved spiritual leader appeared in his traditional robes and a bright yellow wrap, assisted by two monks. The local temples resounded with joyous chants, complemented by lively performances featuring dance troupes adorned in traditional costumes, clanging cymbals, and bagpipes.
Joining the festivities was actor Richard Gere, a long-time supporter of the Dalai Lama. He took to the podium with enthusiasm, expressing that it was a "joyous, joyous day" to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s extraordinary life. Gere embraced him warmly, emphasizing the Dalai Lama's embodiment of selflessness.
The celebrations marked the conclusion of a week filled with long-life prayers that began earlier in the week, coinciding with the Tibetan lunar calendar birthday. In a heartfelt message to his followers, the Dalai Lama assured them of his good health and declared his intention to continue living for another 40 years, extending his life expectancy prediction unexpectedly. Though he usually refrains from birthday celebrations, he expressed gratitude for the occasion, encouraging reflection on peace and compassion.
In his birthday message, he urged attendees to cultivate a good heart and foster compassion not just towards loved ones, but towards all beings. He did, however, confirm that discussions on his potential successor were necessary—putting to rest questions surrounding the future of the institution of the Dalai Lama.
With the ongoing political tensions regarding his reincarnation, the Dalai Lama has previously stated that his successor would be determined outside of China, where he has lived in exile since 1959 after fleeing Chinese rule. The Chinese government insists that any succession must adhere to its laws and rituals, intensifying concerns among Tibetans in exile about the possibility of Beijing exerting control over the next Dalai Lama.
Wishing him well on this significant birthday were Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who referred to him as an enduring symbol of love and compassion, and former President Barack Obama, who praised him as "the youngest 90-year-old" he knows. As the Dalai Lama celebrates this milestone, the question of the future of Tibetan Buddhism and the continuation of the Dalai Lama’s legacy remains prominently in the hearts and minds of his followers.
