**Jimmy Lai Defends Against Foreign Collusion Accusations in National Security Trial**

In a pivotal court appearance, Lai asserts he never used foreign ties to influence Hong Kong policies.

Lai's trial highlights the crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong, as the pro-democracy figure maintains his innocence amid serious charges.

Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy advocate in Hong Kong and founder of the now-defunct tabloid Apple Daily, took the witness stand for the first time in a national security trial that could result in a life sentence. The 76-year-old faces accusations of colluding with foreign powers, but he firmly denied these claims during his testimony. On Wednesday, Lai stated, “I have never” sought to use contacts such as former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence or former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen to sway foreign policy regarding Hong Kong.

Currently serving multiple prison sentences for his involvement in pro-democracy demonstrations in 2019, Lai’s trial comes on the heels of sentencing for 45 other activists known collectively as the Hong Kong 47. Arriving at the Court of Final Appeal in high spirits, despite notable weight loss, Lai acknowledged supporters gathered outside.

When questioned about efforts to influence foreign policy by leverage of his connections, Lai replied emphatically, “never.” During his testimony about a meeting with Pence, he clarified that his role was simply to inform the Vice President of the situation in Hong Kong, and he did not issue any requests. Regarding his discussion with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Lai emphasized the importance of advocacy for Hong Kong rather than direct requests for action.

Lai stands accused of two conspiracy charges related to foreign collusion, as well as a third charge concerning Apple Daily, which allegedly published seditious content under the national security law implemented by Beijing. He contended that he condemned violence and disallowed any calls for Hong Kong independence within his publication. “The core values of Apple Daily mirror the core values of Hong Kong's people,” he declared, citing principles like democracy, freedom of speech, and assembly.

The trial has drawn notable international attention, with human rights groups and global leaders advocating for Lai's freedom. U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated he would make Lai’s release a priority, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed concern over the situation during a recent meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Lai, who is a British citizen, has faced continuous scrutiny and legal challenges under a law that critics argue is being used to silence dissent. His previous convictions have led to solitary confinement, raising health concerns highlighted by his family and legal representatives amid ongoing proceedings. As this significant legal battle unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.
