In the heart of Uganda's capital, Kampala, the SomChess Academy, renowned for its success in nurturing chess talents, remains committed to empowering youth from Katwe, a disadvantaged neighborhood. Founded by Robert Katende, whose story inspired the 2016 Disney film "Queen of Katwe," the academy has seen remarkable success in shaping the futures of its players, despite significant financial difficulties.

For over twenty years, Katende has engaged local children with chess, envisioning it as more than just a game—he sees it as a platform for personal growth and resilience. "Chess acts as a medium to identify potential and direct youth towards better paths," he explained during a recent visit, emphasizing his passion for transforming lives through the strategic game.

The academy gained international fame through the story of Phiona Mutesi, a former drop-out who became a chess prodigy and later a national junior champion. Under Katende's mentorship, Mutesi competed in various prestigious tournaments and received recognition from the World Chess Federation as a Woman Candidate Master. Her story became a beacon of hope for many young players, including current rising star Patricia Kawuma.

Kawuma, a two-time national junior chess champion, credits chess for instilling discipline and strategic thinking in her life. She has utilized her winnings from competitions to fund her education and assist her family, embodying the transformative impact of the academy.

While over 4,000 pupils have passed through his programs, Katende is currently sustaining operations with around 2,500 children and 800 inmates participating in training sessions. The financial situation, however, has grown increasingly precarious, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted funding sources and support.

Financial strains began to mount following the film's release—despite the promise of a significant profit share, the movie resulted in losses for Disney, leading to an unexpected drop in funds for Katende's initiatives. Many locals mistakenly perceived him as wealthy, unaware of the financial battles he faces.

Moreover, the current Ugandan junior chess champion, Jovan Kasozi, has been impacted by the lack of funds. He missed out on a crucial international tournament due to inability to secure the necessary airfare, highlighting the harsh realities many young talents face.

Katende remains hopeful for the future, believing that any eventual profits from the film could help revitalize and grow his projects. "I think Disney's support helped us gain visibility, which has attracted other partners," he remarked, as he remains steadfast in his mission to use chess as a tool for profound change in the community.

With a legacy that has already changed countless lives, the SomChess Academy embodies resilience and dedication amidst the challenges. As Katende continues to nurture new talents, there’s a collective belief that, just like in chess, every setback presents an opportunity to strategize and improve.
