Pope Francis Shows Medical Improvement Amid Pneumonia Battle
Vatican reports progress in the health of the 88-year-old pontiff, continuing to monitor his condition closely.
Pope Francis, aged 88, is displaying signs of recovery after struggling with pneumonia for two weeks, according to recent updates from the Vatican. The pontiff will remain in Rome's Gemelli Hospital as a precautionary measure due to ongoing health complexities. On Friday morning, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis had a "peaceful night" and is currently resting, with Italian news agency Ansa noting that he is no longer in the "critical phase" of his illness.
The Pope was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after suffering breathing difficulties for several days. Initially diagnosed with bronchitis, his condition evolved into pneumonia in both lungs. Just over a week ago, the Vatican disclosed that the pontiff had experienced respiratory distress leading to a critical health status; however, a subsequent update stated that he had not faced any further crises since then.
Despite positive signs, the Vatican cautioned that the Pope's prognosis still requires several more days of clinical stability. The Pope, who has a history of respiratory issues including pleurisy and a partial lung removal, had made multiple hospital visits throughout his 12-year papacy, the latest being for bronchitis in March 2023.
As the first Latin American and Jesuit leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis has built a strong following worldwide, with many actively praying for his health and gathering in support during this challenging time.
