Pope Francis Addresses the Faithful During Easter Mass Despite Health Concerns

Pope Francis made a poignant appearance at St. Peter's Basilica on Easter Sunday, blessing the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square. Despite struggling with frailty after a recent hospitalization for pneumonia, his presence was met with loud cheers from the crowd.

Riding in a wheelchair, Francis greeted the audience with a soft "Happy Easter," after which Archbishop Diego Ravelli delivered the traditional "Urbi et Orbi" address, which is bestowed during significant occasions like Easter and Christmas. In this year's address, the pontiff emphasized the need for peace amidst ongoing global conflicts.

Following the address, the Pope blessed the crowd, eliciting calls of "Viva il Papa" in a show of support and love from the gathered worshippers. Prior to his balcony appearance, he had a brief meeting with JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, who was in Rome for the Easter weekend.

Pope Francis had been discharged from the hospital several weeks prior, on March 23, where he was treated for pneumonia and other complications. Doctors recommended he limit his exposure to crowds and take time for recovery, highlighting how close he was to death during his hospitalization.
