Three Iranian Nationals Charged with Espionage Activities in the UK
Concerns escalate as Iranian operatives reportedly target British citizens and residents, leading to arrests in London.
Three Iranian nationals have been charged in London with aiding Iran's intelligence efforts by allegedly surveilling individuals in the UK. The accused, identified as Mostafa Sepahvand (39), Farhad Javadi Manesh (44), and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori (55), faced court on charges related to actions that allegedly supported a foreign intelligence service, specifically between August 14, 2024, and February 16, 2025.
The charges were made under Britain’s National Security Act, highlighting a significant concern regarding Iranian operatives targeting both British residents and citizens. The arrests were executed by the Metropolitan Police on May 3, with the statement confirming that Iran was the foreign state linked to the charges.
Reports suggest that the trio focused on journalists associated with Iran International, a critical Persian-language broadcaster headquartered in London. All three men had entered the UK unlawfully between 2016 and 2022, with at least two of them arriving via small boats from France.
Yvette Cooper, Britain’s Home Secretary, stated that the legal process must unfold without prejudice while also indicating the need for broader actions against Iranian state threats. Cooper emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding British security by holding Iran accountable.
Ken McCallum, the head of MI5, has previously articulated concerns regarding the increasing threat from Iran, with numerous plots being investigated since early 2022 that pose significant risks to British nationals. The ongoing situation underlines the pressing need for vigilance against foreign espionage activities on British soil.
