Iranian officials assert they will not engage in nuclear talks until Israel ceases its aggressive actions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has firmly stated that Iran will not reengage in discussions over its nuclear program until Israel's "aggression is stopped." This announcement follows a series of confrontations in the region, including Iran's recent missile attacks on northern Israel and retaliatory strikes from Israel targeting various sites within Iran.
On Friday, in Geneva, Araghchi met with European diplomats who encouraged a revival of diplomatic communications with the United States concerning Tehran's nuclear ambitions. However, he emphasized that Iran views its nuclear program as peaceful and accused Israel of violating international law through its recent military actions. "I make it crystal clear that Iran's defense capabilities are non-negotiable," he stated.
Israel's Defense Minister has warned of a "prolonged campaign," forecasting difficult days ahead for both nations. Meanwhile, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations criticized Iran's agenda, labeling it genocidal and highlighting the ongoing security threat posed by the Islamic republic. Israel has vowed to continue targeting Iranian nuclear facilities until they are dismantled.
In the U.S., President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, stating they have a two-week period to reconsider their stance or face potential American air strikes. He conveyed skepticism towards the ongoing diplomatic talks involving European nations, asserting that Iran wishes to negotiate directly with the U.S.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot echoed calls for resolution amid the escalating situation, with Barrot stressing that military means alone will not resolve the nuclear issue.
As tensions rise, missile exchanges have intensified, resulting in casualties on both sides, including the death of an Israeli citizen due to a heart attack amidst the conflict. The Israeli military reported a recent assault of approximately 20 missiles targeting Haifa, while in retaliation, it conducted airstrikes against ballistic missile launch sites in western Iran.
The humanitarian toll has been significant, with reports indicating at least 224 fatalities in Iran according to their health ministry, contrasting with human rights data suggesting an even higher death toll. The ongoing hostilities have spurred fear and unrest, prompting many Iranians to flee the country in search of safety.
