Shooting at Florida State University Leaves Two Dead, Several Injured

Tragedy unfolds as a Florida college student uses his police officer mother’s service weapon to carry out a shooting on campus, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

A shocking incident at Florida State University (FSU) has left two individuals dead and six others injured after 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner allegedly opened fire with a gun previously owned by his mother, a police officer. The shooting occurred around midday near a student union in Tallahassee, prompting urgent responses from law enforcement and university authorities.

Local police were alerted to an active shooter situation just after noon. Phoenix Ikner, identified as a current FSU student, reportedly initiated the attack while wielding his mother’s former service firearm. Following the chaos, he was shot by police officers and is now hospitalized. The identities of the deceased, who were not students, have not yet been disclosed.

Sheriff Walt McNeil spoke on the incident, stating that Jessica Ikner, the suspect’s mother, was a dependable officer and had retained the weapon after the police department underwent a firearms update. Witness accounts describe a scene filled with panic and confusion, with students hearing shots and scrambling for safety.

This incident echoes past tragedies at FSU, including a 2015 shooting that resulted in injuries, raising the alarm for ongoing gun violence issues. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump both commented on the shooting, with Trump emphasizing his stance on gun rights while expressing dismay over the occurrence.

Amidst the grief, advocates like Fred Guttenberg pointed out that some survivors from the Parkland shooting were present during the FSU attack, underscoring a troubling pattern of gun violence that continues to affect students across the state.
