The Art of Zoning Out: Seoul's Unique Space-Out Competition
An exploration into Seoul's annual Space-Out Competition that challenges participants to embrace inactivity in a hyper-competitive society.
In a vibrant corner of Seoul, the annual Space-Out Competition draws contestants eager to master the art of doing nothing. As I nestled on a pink yoga mat with the sounds of the Han River and city life surrounding me, I embarked on a quest for stony stillness. The task, however, proved to be anything but simple. My heart raced at a starting rate of 116 beats per minute, not just from the physical discomfort of sitting cross-legged, but from the looming presence of an audience, an announcer’s boisterous commentary, and an instinct from our ancestral past pushing me to move.
Competing against 79 others, the goal was simple yet complex: to embody inactivity for 90 minutes. Participants aimed to achieve the lowest and steadiest heart rate, measured at 15-minute intervals, while also winning over the crowd. The irony of striving to win by doing nothing was not lost on me as I began to question my very participation.
Held in May, this competition was more than a unique test; it served as a commentary on the pressures of modern life and a reminder that indulging in moments of stillness can be beneficial. Many fellow participants shared that their daily experiences of inadvertently zoning out had prepared them for this bizarre contest.
As I attempted to clear my mind and relax amidst the surrounding chaos, I found the very act of trying to succeed counterproductive. The technique often used in competitive environments showcased a fresh perspective on societal norms and productivity. With each passing moment, the challenge to hold back my instinct to fidget and engage became a fascinating exploration of oneself. Through the comedic lens of competition, the Space-Out Competition redefined productivity, inviting everyone to appreciate the subtle art of inactivity amidst a relentless whirlwind of activity.
