It seems that enthusiasm surrounding the Colosseum has soared recently, but it's not due to cinematic events like the release of the much-anticipated “Gladiator” sequel. Instead, a controversial initiative involving the famous amphitheater and Airbnb has ignited a heated debate among Romans, who believe it undermines the significance of this cultural landmark.

In May, a unique event will allow an exclusive group of 32 participants to engage in gladiator fighting lessons within the ancient arena, instructed by experts in historical reenactments. This collaboration between the Colosseum Archaeological Park and Airbnb, which has contributed $1.5 million to enhance a permanent exhibition at the site, aims to illuminate the historical richness of this ancient practice while supporting ongoing conservation efforts.

Despite these noble intentions, backlash has arisen from various quarters. Local figures and cultural custodians express discontent, warning against transforming the Colosseum into a mere entertainment venue. Massimiliano Smeriglio, a member of Rome's City Council focused on cultural affairs, emphasized the need to protect the site's integrity and announced plans to engage with Airbnb representatives to reconsider the event.
