At least 20 people have been injured in southern Israel following a drone attack alleged to have been launched from Yemen. The strike targeted the popular resort town of Eilat on the Red Sea coast, prompting immediate responses from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The Magen David Adom emergency medical services confirmed that those injured have been transported to Yoseftal Hospital, including two men suffering serious limb injuries.
The Iranian-backed Houthi group stated responsibility for the drone strike, claiming two of their drones targeted 'Israeli enemy areas' in what they described as a 'successful operation.'
Israeli television aired live footage showing the aftermath with smoke rising from the attack site. Eyewitness accounts described a drone descending behind buildings before the explosion.
In response, IDF troops and police were dispatched to control the situation, and a helicopter was deployed to evacuate the wounded. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz condemned the attack, cautioning that harm to Israel would be met with severe repercussions.
This incident marks one of the most severe assaults by the Houthis on Israeli territory. Previous month, a similar drone attack on Tel Aviv resulted in casualties and highlights the ongoing threats from Houthi forces, which have increased their missile and drone activities amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The situation remains tense as the conflict continues, with both sides engaged in retaliatory strikes following this and other recent attacks.
