Zelensky Calls for Increased Pressure on Russia at Paris Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to US and European leaders to intensify pressure on Russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire, as discussions continue regarding efforts to end the ongoing conflict. The high-profile talks took place in Paris and involved prominent figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. This meeting marked a significant step in transatlantic dialogue concerning the war since February.

The discussions commenced with a meeting at the Elysée Palace, followed by engagements with counterparts from Ukraine, Germany, and the UK. Amidst this, Zelensky reiterated the necessity for a ceasefire, stating, “Russia uses every day and every night to kill.” However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the meeting's objectives, alleging that European executives were solely focused on prolonging the war.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported that attendees discussed establishing pathways to a fair peace, including multinational contingents and security guarantees for Ukraine. Diplomatic hints indicated that European officials were advocating for the United States to adopt a firmer stance to make Russia agree to an unconditional ceasefire.

Just days prior to the meeting, Russian strikes led to devastating losses in Ukrainian cities, with recent attacks resulting in civilian casualties. Following a brief encounter last week between Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the US envoy indicated a potential openness from Russia towards “permanent peace,” despite Moscow's recent rejection of a ceasefire proposal that the US and Ukraine had previously agreed upon.

Tensions remain palpable between Trump and Zelensky since a confrontational dialogue at the White House in February, where disagreements regarding initiating peace negotiations were expressed.
