In an old, neo-gothic building in Fort, an upmarket area in Mumbai, lies the office of Parsiana, one of India's most historic Parsi magazines. Established in 1964 by Pestonji Warden, a Parsi doctor, the publication served to chronicle and strengthen the Parsi community.
Over the years, Parsiana garnered a loyal readership, offering unique insights into Parsi life, connecting members of the dwindling community worldwide. Unfortunately, after 60 years of coverage, the magazine will cease publication this October, citing declining subscribers, a lack of funds, and no successor to carry the legacy forward.
This announcement has disheartened many, evoking nostalgia and memories of a publication integral to the Parsi identity. It's like the end of an era, lamented Sushant Singh, 18, a student, reflecting the sentiments of countless others.
At the forefront of its operations for decades has been Jehangir Patel, who bought Parsiana for just one rupee in 1973. Patel transformed the magazine from a simple monthly into a colourful fortnightly that tackled sensitive community issues with candor and wit. His editorial leadership is remembered fondly, with many readers praising the magazine for its commitment to journalistic integrity.
Under Patel's guidance, Parsiana achieved notable milestones, including publishing interfaith matrimonial ads which were at the heart of community discussions and controversies. It wasn't just a magazine; its pages chronicled achievements, events, and the struggles of the Parsi community.
As the 15-member team, predominantly in their 60s and 70s, prepare for the final issue, they reflect on a career dedicated to informing and connecting a scattered diaspora.
There's a sense of tiredness mixed with the sadness, Mr. Patel acknowledges, as he prepares to close this chapter of his life and the life of Parsiana.
As the last issue approaches, they plan to commemorate the magazine's rich history, celebrating the significant impact it has had on the Parsi community worldwide. Despite the challenges, the spirit of Parsiana's mission to document and connect will live on in the hearts of its readers.
