Mother's Hunger Strike: Urgent Action Needed for Jailed Son in Egypt
Laila Soueif's 151-day fast threatens her life as she seeks her son Alaa Abd El Fattah's release.
Laila Soueif, aged 68, has been hospitalized amid her 151-day hunger strike demanding the release of her son, Alaa Abd El Fattah, a prominent Egyptian political prisoner. Her health has severely deteriorated, prompting medical warnings about her risk of sudden death. The professor and mathematician has been subsisting on water, rehydration salts, and herbal tea since her strike started in late September, after the anticipated release of her son following his five-year sentence for a Facebook post advocating against prison abuse did not transpire.
Despite her precarious state, Soueif remains resolute in her campaign, emphasizing the need for the British government to leverage its diplomatic and economic connections with Egypt to secure her son’s freedom. She stated in an interview last fall, “When people ask, ‘What do you think you’re doing?’ I say, ‘I’m creating a crisis,’” underscoring her commitment to the cause.
Currently staying in London, Soueif was admitted to a hospital this week due to dangerously low blood sugar and blood pressure levels, according to family reports.
