Tragic Accident: British Woman Loses Life while Rafting in French Alps

A British tourist dies while participating in a white-water rafting adventure in the Guisane river, sparking an investigation.

A British woman has tragically lost her life during a white-water rafting trip on the Guisane river in Briancon, located in the southern part of France. The incident occurred shortly after noon local time on Saturday, when the woman fell from her raft while navigating a challenging section of the river known as "the wallet." Regional prosecutor Marion Lozac'hmeur reported that the woman was discovered on the riverbank and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in serious condition, but sadly passed away in the evening.

The Foreign Office has confirmed the death of a British citizen and is working with local authorities on the matter. The woman, who has not yet been identified by officials, was part of an organized rafting excursion when the accident occurred. An investigation into involuntary manslaughter has been launched, and an autopsy is set to take place.

This incident recalls a similar tragedy last year when a British man lost his life while kayaking on the Durance river, another popular waterway in the same region, after heavy snowmelt created treacherous conditions. Both the Guisane and Durance rivers are known for their challenging rapids, typical in early summer when runoff from glaciers and snowmelt peaks, making adventurers drawn to their thrilling waters.
