Zelensky Returns to Ukraine After Deadly Russian Attack in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Zelensky cancels South Africa visit following deadly missile strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has hastily cut short his inaugural trip to South Africa due to a severe Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv, which left at least nine people dead and over 70 injured, including several children. In a message posted on X, Zelensky confirmed his immediate return to Ukraine following a brief meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. His decision underscores the urgency of addressing the attack, which has resulted in significant destruction across the capital.
The overnight assault has raised alarm bells amid a ceasefire agreement, with Zelensky referencing that it has now been 44 days since Ukraine committed to halting strikes based on a proposal from the United States. In a developing political narrative, former US President Donald Trump criticized Zelensky, alleging that his refusal to acknowledge Russian control over Crimea is undermining peace negotiations.
Ukraine maintains a firm stance against relinquishing Crimea, illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, a position that complicates potential negotiations. Trump described the prospect of a deal to conclude the conflict as "very close" but indicated that the Ukrainian leader's obstinance could prolong the war.
Earlier on Wednesday, US Vice-President JD Vance articulated a potential framework for a peace deal that involves "freezing territorial lines" in their current state, implying mutual territorial compromises from both Ukraine and Russia. However, the specific areas that might require concessions remain unspecified. When pressed about the possibility of recognizing Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Trump emphasized merely the need for the war to come to an end. Acknowledging Russia's claims over Crimea not only poses a considerable political challenge for Zelensky but also contradicts established international legal principles that advocate against territorial changes through military force.
