Pope Leo XIV's First Blessing Calls for Global Peace

In a historic first blessing, Pope Leo XIV emphasizes the urgent need for peace in Ukraine and Gaza.

In his inaugural address from St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo XIV condemned war and urged global leaders to foster peace and humanity.

Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt plea for peace during his first Sunday blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, addressing thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square shortly after his papal inauguration. Reflecting on the nearly 80th anniversary of World War II's conclusion, he echoed sentiments voiced by his predecessor, Pope Francis, regarding ongoing global conflicts, labeling them a “third world war in pieces.”

"Never again war," Leo proclaimed, resonating with the crowd's fervent applause, as he called on world leaders to strive for “authentic, just, and lasting peace.” Specifically, he focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, demanding the release of prisoners and advocating for the return of children inadvertently taken from their families amidst the chaos of war—highlighting the plight of many Ukrainian children reportedly relocated to Russia against their will.

Furthermore, the Pope called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. He urged for unrestricted humanitarian aid delivery to those suffering in the region and appealed for the return of hostages linked to the attacks by Hamas on Israel on October 7. The themes of peace Leo championed resonated deeply with the messages often preached by his predecessor.

Displaying warmth and relatability, the new pope sent a special greeting to mothers in the audience, coinciding with Mother’s Day celebrations observed in countries like Italy and the United States. He also recognized the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, remarking on the dire need for more individuals to commit to priesthood and religious orders amidst a decline in their numbers.

Attending the address was Candice Dias from California, who remarked on Leo's humble persona, stating, "He seems to be very down to earth." Leo has outlined his commitment to prioritizing the needs of ordinary people over the affluent and powerful since assuming the papacy. In a series of meetings with cardinals, he pledged to follow Francis's vision of a more missionary-focused church, with an emphasis on cooperation and outreach to marginalized communities.

As preparations continue for Vatican tours that include the previously closed Sistine Chapel, the anticipated return of the chapel to public access symbolizes a fresh chapter in the Vatican under Leo's leadership.
