In brief

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is currently stable and recovering in an intensive care unit following emergency surgery to manage bleeding in his skull. The bleeding is believed to be associated with a fall he suffered in October. Doctors reported that the procedure—aimed at draining a hematoma—was without complications and that Mr. Lula is doing well.

Dr. Roberto Kalil, part of the medical team overseeing the president's care, provided updates noting that Lula, 79, was admitted to Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brasília after experiencing severe headaches and flu-like symptoms. An MRI revealed an intracranial hemorrhage, prompting his transfer to a São Paulo facility for the two-hour surgery. Dr. Kalil emphasized that the surgery did not affect Lula's brain function or movement. The president is expected to be under care and observation for a few days, during which he is reportedly stable, alert, and eating normally.
