In brief

Tropical Storm Trami has wreaked havoc, with significant flooding in the Philippines leading to casualties and displacement, before making landfall in Vietnam and raising concerns over further disasters.

Tropical Storm Trami made its impact felt as it hit Vietnam on Sunday, having recently devastated the Philippines with flooding and fatalities. The storm came ashore close to the coastal city of Danang, according to local meteorological authorities, and was packing maximum wind speeds of 55 miles per hour, marking a significant but not hurricane-level threat.Trami had traversed the South China Sea after resulting in the deaths of at least 80 individuals and injuring over 66 in various provinces across the Philippines, particularly in Batangas. The Philippine Office of Civil Defense reported that 34 people remain unaccounted for. As the storm advanced into Vietnam, experts warned of potential flooding and landslides in the coastal regions. In anticipation of the storm's arrival, measures were taken to ground flights at four central Vietnamese airports, including Danang International, but operations resumed later the same day. Meteorologists in Vietnam cautioned that some areas could receive nearly 16 inches of rain, heightening the risks of flooding around Danang. The aftermath of Trami in the Philippines has been severe, leading to mass displacement with over half a million individuals forced from their homes. Damages included approximately 28,000 houses affected and widespread power outages in over 150 municipalities, hampering the distribution of relief aid to severely impacted regions.Amidst the chaos, another tropical storm, Kong-rey, is developing near the Philippines, displaying similar wind speeds. Kong-rey is anticipated to interact with the coast of Luzon in the coming days before heading toward Japan's Ryukyu Islands. This follows a tumultuous month marked by Typhoon Yagi, which resulted in the deaths of at least 24 individuals in both China and the Philippines. Yagi's path also took it into Vietnam, inflicting severe damage along the way, particularly in northern regions before dwindling in strength.
