In brief
Nevada's Mount Kanlaon's recent eruption prompts heightened emergency response as authorities evacuate thousands from the surrounding region, raising concerns over potential future eruptions.
The Philippine government has issued urgent evacuation orders for nearly 90,000 residents on the central island of Negros following a significant eruption of Mount Kanlaon. The volcano erupted on Monday afternoon, releasing a towering plume of ash and lava that reached two miles into the atmosphere, accompanied by large rocks. The incident has raised alarms among officials regarding the impending risk of further explosive activity in the area.Teresito Bacolcol, head of seismology at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, described the eruption as extremely destructive, capable of incinerating everything in its vicinity, including flora, structures, and human life. Following the eruption, authorities elevated the alarm status from Level 2 to Level 3, indicating an increased likelihood of sudden and potentially stronger eruptions ahead.A danger zone has been established within a 6-kilometer (3.7 miles) radius of the volcano, impacting approximately 47,000 individuals in the upland town of La Castellana as per assessments from the Office of Civil Defense. To accommodate evacuees, the Panaad Stadium near Bacolod City, with a capacity of 30,000, has been designated as the central evacuation site, while additional shelters have been organized in eleven nearby villages. The Philippines is home to around 100 volcanoes, 24 of which are classified as active. Situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country bears witness to 75 percent of the world’s volcanoes. Historical records show that Mount Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1866, with significant incidents leading to fatalities, including the tragic death of three hikers in a 1996 eruption.
