In brief

In response to antisemitic violence linked to a soccer match, Amsterdam police have arrested four suspects while continuing their investigations, having previously detained 62 individuals during escalating tensions between fans.

On Saturday, Dutch law enforcement confirmed that four individuals are in custody as part of an ongoing inquiry into antisemitic aggression directed at Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam. The incidents occurred during and after a high-profile match between Ajax, a local Dutch team, and Maccabi Tel Aviv, representing Israel, on Thursday. The initial unrest encompassed violent confrontations over two days, prompting police to detain a total of 62 individuals. Many of those arrested were released shortly thereafter, yet the authorities retained four suspects, all facing allegations of public violence. Among these is a 26-year-old man apprehended after being identified through CCTV footage. As the soccer fans made their way to the stadium, they were escorted by police, who took measures to ensure their safety amid heightened ire related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Unrest surged as Israeli fans chanted provocative slogans, some denouncing the situation in Gaza, leading pro-Palestinian groups to confront them outside the stadium.Marijke Stor, a spokesperson for the police, highlighted that the investigation remains active, suggesting additional arrests may follow. Although no formal charges have been filed, she stressed that being released does not exclude individuals from ongoing scrutiny.
