In brief

Edinburgh Zoo is mourning the loss of Roxie, a baby red panda who tragically died earlier this month after succumbing to the stress caused by fireworks during the city's annual Bonfire Night celebrations. Just five days prior to her passing, Roxie had lost her mother, Ginger, which had already left her vulnerable. Despite initial concerns of her health, staff were hopeful when she began to eat on her own. However, that hope quickly vanished as footage revealed the distressing effects of the firework displays.

Roxie was seen reacting with agitation to the loud explosions, leading to severe health complications. "Roxie was very frightened by the fireworks," pointed out Ben Supple, deputy chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. Tragically, the young panda choked and died on November 5, prompting Mr. Supple to express deep sorrow over her loss, stressing that she could have been an outstanding ambassador for her species. Her untimely death has led the zoological society to advocate for stricter regulations on fireworks, particularly during Bonfire Night, a tradition marked by large firework displays. This call follows a growing public sentiment for change, as over one million individuals signed a petition demanding tighter controls on the use of fireworks in the UK. The petition reached the British government last week, highlighting concerns over the impact of fireworks on both wildlife and the community.
