In brief

Jordan’s security forces have thwarted a significant plot that highlights rising threats amid ongoing regional unrest.

In a remarkable announcement, Jordan's security services disclosed on Tuesday that they have apprehended 16 individuals tied to a scheme threatening national security, involving the production of weapons, explosives, and drones. The General Intelligence Department of Jordan termed the plans as extensive, suggesting years of development aimed at destabilizing the kingdom's stability, which is often viewed as a bastion of calm in a tumultuous region.Jordan has historically played a pivotal role in supporting its Western allies in counterterrorism efforts, particularly against Islamist groups and in brokering peace within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the country now faces heightened internal discontent, fueled by ongoing conflicts such as the war in Gaza. Despite being a refuge for roughly half its population of Palestinians, Jordan has encountered mounting pressure as public sentiment shifts against its previous support for Israel during critical moments, including the interception of missiles launched from Iran last spring. In its Tuesday statement, Jordan’s intelligence indicated that they have kept a close watch on the detained individuals since 2021—a year marked by an attempted palace coup. In April of that year, King Abdullah II publicly attributed an alleged conspiracy threatening his reign to his half-brother, Prince Hamza, prompting the arrest of 14 conspirators. Although the current arrests seem unrelated to that incident, their timing is notable. The recent plot allegedly involved the local production of missiles, imports of explosive materials, and schematics for constructing drones. It also included plans to train recruits both locally and abroad. Intelligence reports indicate a potential connection to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, exacerbated by the recent outbreak of violence in Gaza. Regional and U.S. officials have pointed to Jordan's ongoing efforts to thwart Iranian smuggling operations aimed at supplying arms to militants in the West Bank, underscoring the rising stakes in a local security landscape that has grown increasingly precarious amidst external pressures.
