In brief
In the heart of Tehran, murals have become a canvas for expressing defiance against Israel, symbolizing the strain in Iranian-Israeli relations amidst growing conflict.
As tensions mount between Iran and Israel, vivid murals adorning the walls of Palestine Square in Tehran have emerged as a form of political expression, conveying direct threats to Israel. Under the direction of the Center for Islamic Propaganda, closely aligned with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, these artworks frequently change and carry messages in both Hebrew and Persian for clarity.A particularly striking mural, unveiled in January, bore the chilling phrase “Prepare your coffins,” highlighted against a backdrop of missiles. By April, another mural featuring the Star of David ominously warned, “Die from this fear.” A recent installation featured a collage of hostages held in Gaza by the militant group Hamas — which Iran supports — with a stark declaration: “None of the hostages will be released.”In the backdrop of these messages, pro-government supporters gather at Palestine Square, often adorned in traditional checkered kaffiyehs, brandishing flags of Palestine and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia backed by Iran. Activists maintain a tent in the square to collect aid for Palestinians and Lebanese citizens affected by ongoing conflicts.Symbolizing Iran's enduring opposition to Israel, a countdown clock was also established in 2021 in Palestine Square, marking the days until the regime's projection of Israel’s downfall. These murals serve as potent reminders of the strained relationships and escalating rhetoric in a region fraught with conflict and uncertainty.
